On May 20th, Patti Smith took the stage at the Sandy Hook Promise Champions Gala in New York City, lending her voice and presence to the growing movement to prevent gun violence. As a new member of the Artist For Action coalition, Smith performed some of her most iconic songs, including “Because The Night” and “People Have The Power,” alongside longtime collaborator Tony Shanahan and Artist For Action co-founder Mark Barden.

The performance served as both tribute and call to action. Smith reminded the audience to “use your voice” and emphasized the purpose behind the night: “This is for the children.” Her message echoed the mission of Artist For Action—to mobilize artists and creatives in support of organizations like Sandy Hook Promise that are making measurable progress in communities across the country.

Sandy Hook Promise’s programs have reached over 35 million people and are credited with preventing more than 1,000 suicides and stopping 18 planned school shootings. These results show that gun violence is not inevitable—it’s preventable with education, awareness, and community action. Artist For Action is bringing voices together to support that change.
